Hello Friends!
Thank you so much to everyone who came out for the gallery night and to those who purchased from the end-of-summer sale!
I’m so grateful for your support and excited to keep sharing the love—I’ve extended the sale until October 15! Check out my Instagram Highlights for more details and updates on the available works!
I also created this video to give you a closer look at the paintings available!
When I started painting again in 2009, I often struggled if I didn’t see something inspiring in those first layers. I’d get lost and didn’t know what to paint—until I learned to create my characters using simple shapes.
It’s magical when I intuitively know what to do next with a painting.
But if I’m unsure of the next step (which happens often), I sketch my character using simple shapes. That way, I always have a place to start.
I always begin my faces with the same color palette: a circle of titanium white mixed with a flesh tone. Then, I add a layer of Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold acrylic paint to create shadows behind the eyes. This gives the surface a bit of contrast so I can sketch the initial eyes and features. I often add green gold or cobalt teal to the sides of the face or above the eyes to add extra dimension. These colors work well together and really make the face pop.
3 Tips For Color Palettes For Faces
Begin with a circle of titanium white mixed with a flesh tone
Create depth with a warm brown like Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold acrylic paint (or sepia works too) for shadows behind the eyes
Create dimension with cool colors like green gold and cobalt teal at the sides of the face
I invite you to learn more about my process and techniques in my Free Sketchbook Class and Free Mixed Media Painting Class. I hope they help to spark your creativity!
Happy painting!
